HOME OF THE WINDJAMMERS

Mariehamn has a long heritage of sea travels and makes a perfect host port for The Tall Ships Races. The race usually bring together up to a hundred ships, and during the event they will be berthed along side the dock in the western harbour.

Most ships will be open for visitors and it is all set for an enjoyable maritime atmosphere. Also, the trainees – the young crew from the ships – will help bring the international spice to this event.

MARITIME MARIEHAMN

Mariehamn, the home of many shipowners with large sailing ship fleets is like made for The Tall Ships. Several shipowners used to live in town and from the late 19th century until the first decades of the 20th century, large sailing ships were a common sight in the western harbour in Mariehamn. Shipping has laid the foundation for Åland's prosperity – they brought wealth back home and many Ålanders worked at sea.

POMMERN – PRIDE OF MARIEHAMN

Captain Gustaf Erikson with his windjammers dominated the sailing ship era from the 1920s until WW2. His ships sailed around the world, often with grain as cargo from Australia to England.

The tall ship Pommern belonged to Erikson's fleet. Today she is the only four-masted barque in the world in original condition. When in Mariehamn, go aboard Pommern and visit the unique collections of Åland Maritime Museum.
