JOIN SAIL ÅLAND STREET FESTIVAL IN MARITIME MARIEHAMN
Book 22-25 July in your calendar for a maritime adventure in Åland as the most awesome summer street festival, Sail Åland, will be held in Mariehamn.
This summer Mariehamn will not be hosting The Tall Ships Races as planned. Instead, there will be a maritime street festival called Sail Åland 22–25 July with food and drink, entertainment and a street market. The town will be full of life during these four days, but since the festival is outdoors, there will be lots of space and fresh sea air to enjoy as well.
Since Mariehamn is an authentic maritime town with long maritime heritage, it’s a perfect host for a maritime street festival like Sail Åland.
Feel the pulse in Mariehamn, enjoy great food and atmosphere as well as music and live entertainment. The festival-area stretches out to the west side of the city – the harbour promenade, the Pommern-quay, the area surrounding the ÅSS-guest harbour and Badhuspaviljongen pavilion. The Esplanaden boulevard will be full of market stalls all the way to the town church.
All of this takes place during Sail Åland:
- Vendors selling food, drinks, ice-cream and candy
- Vendors selling handcrafted goods, pottery, glass, leather, woodwork, crochets, felts, ropes, maritime goods, jewellery, porcelaine, t-shirts, postcards, puzzles, books and souvenirs
- Designated playgrounds for kids
- Yoga in the morning before the area opens

The maritime street festival Sail Åland fits perfectly a town like Mariehamn. Many shipowners with great sailing fleets used to live in town and from the late 19th century until the first half of the 20th century, impressive sailing ships were a common sight in the western harbour in Mariehamn. Shipping set the frames for the Åland welfare as the ships brought economic wealth to Åland and offered many Ålanders work at sea.
Shipping is still important to Mariehamn and the whole Åland. Many shipping companies have their headquarters in Mariehamn, large cruise ships enter Mariehamn several times a day and you can major in a marine profession in Åland. In the Maritime quarter in Mariehamn new sailing boats are built with workmanlike knowledge according to old tradition.
POMMERN – THE PEARL OF MARIEHAMN
Shipping with tall sailing ships was dominated by the Ålander shipowner Gustaf Erikson from the 1920’s until WWII. His fleet sailed around the whole world, often in grain cargo from Australia to England. One of the ships in Erikson’s fleet was the four masted barque Pommern, which is the last commercial sailing ship in the world in as good as in original shape.
Nowadays Pommern is a museum ship that you can visit in the western harbour in Mariehamn. Don’t miss the opportunity to see the exclusive collections of the Åland Maritime Museum right next to Pommern.
