100 years of willfulness is celebrated 9-12 June 2022

Willfulness has been our lifeblood for well over a hundred years – we have just never celebrated it properly before. We celebrate during an entire year from 9 June 2021. On June 9, 2022, the celebration culminates on the real birthday, which we of course will celebrate in a proper and willful way! Welcome to celebrate with us on the big birthday party for Åland 100 which is celebrated during four days, 9-12 June 2022.

 

Thursday 9 June 2022

You can expect an official programme of celebrations and distinguished visits, music, theatre, children's activities and entertainment. The newly crowned Ålandic dish of the century will also be on offer – the Åland pancake! The Parliament will host their traditional programme by the Julius Sundbloms Statue. In honor the anniversary year we are visited by the Finish President Sauli Niinistö, Prime Minister Sanna Marin and the Swedish King Carl XVI Gustaf and Queen Silvia. Gather the whole family together and celebrate Åland's Autonomy Day with us in the square.

A taste of the new musical ‘The Ålandic King’, which is being brought to life by scriptwriter Dag Thelander, composer Per Wickström and director Arn-Henrik Blomqvist.

TIME 6.15 pm Åland pancake in the square 
We are offering 4,000 pieces of Åland pancake – the winner of the Ålandic dish of the century. There are also options for people with food allergies or particular dietary requirements.

Participants in Deluxe 2021 and winner of Vocalist 2022 will perform. 

 

PARLIAMENTARY PROGRAMME

TIME 5.15 pm Parade
The ceremony begins with a ceremonial parade that starts from the courtyard of the Parliament building, goes along Strandgatan, turns up Ekonomiegatan to Torggatan and comes down to Julius Sundblom’s statue on the south side of the square.

Singing and music, floral tributes and ceremonial speeches by Swedish King Carl XVI Gustaf and Finish President Sauli Niinistö.

The Parliament’s jubilee concert at Andersudde
Only for people with tickets. Transport to Andersudde from Storagatan 6.15 pm. The concert starts at 8.30 pm. Transport return to Bussplan after the concert.

Kastelholm’s village association will celebrate with singing, music, dance and theatre. In Smakbyn, Dur-rackarna will play and coffee and Åland pancakes will be served.

Friday 10 June 2022

We will be hosting open houses at Smart Park and other locations in honor of Åland 100. On Friday afternoon, businesses can compete for the great honor of winning the Åland 100 business competition with an ‘After Work’ mingle to follow. Two stages will be set up in Mariehamn over the weekend – one on Pommernkajen and one in Miramarparken. Enjoy music and entertainment (on Friday afternoon and Saturday) along with a bite to eat. The opera ‘The Devil’s Dance in Skarpans’ is playing at Alandica.

Fire Brigade Museum
Mörbyvägen 121, Hammarland
Free admission. The fire brigade museum has about 20 fire-fighting vehicles and other fire-fighting equipment from the Åland Islands. The oldest fire engine is a 1926 A-Ford and the most modern is a 1969 Volvo.

The Peace Institute

No admission. Åland’s Peace Institute and Ålands medlingsbyrå are hosting an open house and they also have a book sale. Look around the historical premises and look through the interesting selection of books.

AX Discgolf r.f. will organise an event where everyone is welcome to try disc golf. The first 50 people to complete a course will win an Åland 100 medal and free refreshments. You can also take part in a draw for discs.

Alandica kultur och kongresshus
A completely new work – both in terms of text and music. The text is based on the many existing versions of this ‘devil’s dance’, but in the opera it has been given a completely new and unexpected form. The music is accessible and colourful.

Carlsro Badhotell

On 10 June, Carlso Badhotell will invite you to live music & dance in the archipelago, with a fixed Åland 100 menu being served throughout the evening. ‘We will be creating a wishing tree in our avenue of over 100-year-old lime trees where visitors can hang their wishes and hopes for Åland for the next 100 years.’

Play for kids: Kollorna & Plättjuven
Ann-Christin Wallers and Anni Wikbergs loved books “Kollorna” as a play. The play will be preformed at the Town Hall 10-12 June. (Production: Ålands Fria Teatergrupp). Performances:

On the Saturday, you can take part in a variety of activities including parades, a multicultural fashion show, exhibitions, Sloydfest, craft market and activities in the Maritime Quarter, children's activities, music and food. A children's area is being set up in Miramarparken, including a large obstacle course, and there will be many other fun activities for the little ones. Music and entertainment will continue on our two stages.

Bouncy castles
The Pirate Ship (23 m*4 m) – long pirate-themed obstacle course, which looks like a big pirate ship with masts. For this bouncy castle, the child needs to be at least one metre tall. 
The Pirate Adventure (6 m*5 m) – charming activity bouncy castle for smaller children, which includes a cave and hoverball – pirate theme. 
Small obstacle course (7 m*3 m) – smaller obstacle course for smaller children.

A parent or guardian must be present for all events.

Ålands Slöjd & Konsthantverk is organising Åland 100-Sloydfest, a craft festival in Mariehamn’s Maritime Quarter, on Saturday 11 June from 12 noon – 7 pm. 

The Feminist Bacchanal

The Åland Feminist Academy celebrates its 20-year anniversary and Åland 100. This will be celebrated with a Feminist Bacchanal. The Bacchanal will take place on 11-12 June in Saltvik. All previous recipients of the Feminist of the Year award are invited. All interested feminists are welcome!

Skeppargården Pellas local museum
Skepparvägen 30, Lemland
Visit Skeppargården Pellas 12 noon – 4 pm and take part in two old crafts, baking Åland ‘hemvete’ bread and boiling traditional red ochre paint. The museum is open, offering free admission, and the café serves coffee with a ‘hemvete’ sandwich. Guided tours at 1, 2 and 3 pm.

Sunday 12 June 2022

Religious services to mark the anniversary in all Åland churches. After the services, flowers will be placed on the graves of relatives and in the sea. The bishop will take part in a festive Mass at Sund Church, which will be televised. On the Sunday, artists, craftsmen and designers will open their studios and workshops to the public in the Åland 100 creative tour!

Around Lemland in the spirit of shipping and history
Around Lemland in the spirit of shipping and history! Celebrate the Åland 100 anniversary year with a guided bus tour of Lemland on 12 June. Price: €30 with lunch and coffee included. Highlights

Ålandic Dish of the Century - the Åland Pancake

What do Ålanders consider to be the real taste of Åland? In the autumn of 2021, we searched far and wide to find the Ålandic dish of the century. Among numerous nominations, nine finalists were selected and in in an open vote a true classic, the Åland Pancake, was chosen the winner. Thus Åland tastes of eggs, flour, milk, groats, sugar - and, of course, much much more. 9 June we will serve 4000 pices of the Åland Pancake.

Åland Parliament's Official Autonomy Celebration

During the official celebrations you can expect traditional tributes by the Julius Sundblom statue in the square and celebratory visits. The march to the celebration consists of flag bearers, the youth orchestra, members of Parliament, ministers, drill girls and participants in folk costume. You can expect grand speeches and beautiful song – let us cherish our hundred years of self-government!

Multicultural Fashion Show

One of the celebration highlights is a multicultural fashion show which is a collaboration between the Martha association, Emmaus and Ålands mångkulturella förening. The fashion show includes all of Åland's municipalities folk costumes and costumes from all Åland's nationalities. In addition, new recycled clothing will be designed in futuristic creations. The fashion show’s conferencier is Mark Levengood. We hope to bring lots of laughter and joy.

Open Houses

10 June several locations are hosting open houses. You can for example visit Smart Park, where you can try out several fun attractions or why not take the opportunity to get acquainted with the 4H farm and visit all the animals? Other places like the Fire Brigade Museum in Mörby, Hammarland and the Peace Institute open their doors for the public.

100 Metres Hurdles

Friday 10 June at 4.30 pm it is time for all playful adults to compete company against company. Each team must consist of four people, each of whom must pass through a section of the inflatable obstacle course. Each team will thus have made two full laps on the track when the heat is over. The number of teams is limited to twelve teams.

The children’s Åland 100 is celebrated in many ways – everything from open houses, the inflatable obstacle course Megatrack, several different bouncy castles, free balloons and Åland 100 hand flags, creative activities, entertainment, face painting, Åland 100 gnuggis tattoos and so much more…

Sloydfest and Craft Market

The Association of Arts and Crafts in the Aland Islands arranges Sloydfest, a craft festival in the Maritime Quarter in Mariehamn, Saturday 11 June between 12 noon - 7 pm. Here you can experience different craft techniques such as sail sewing and brush binding. Visitors can also carve a spatula for a small fee, make a leather bracelet or belt, or try forging, willow brading and rope making. You can also buy products directly from the local crafters in the craft market.

Åland 100 Creative Tour

On Sunday 12 June at 11 am - 5 pm, participating artists, craftsmen, designers and other creators open their workspaces to the public, a Creative Tour among Åland’s many different creators! Our 35 participants are active in various arts and crafts techniques and materials, photography and a number of different art forms. The participants are both professionals, part-time and hobby creators.
